Most people know our large shark population visits in the spring. They follow the tarpon and bait schools as they migrate up the coast. What few anglers realise is that sharks are here year round. Winter time is one of our favorite times to hook up to an ocean predator! In the cooler months ( dec- feb) the sandbar shark migration swims though South West Florida.
On a recent charter Jon and friends had a blast hooking into these powerful sharks. A sandbar shark is built like a bullshark, just slightly slender. Easiest to identify by the raised skin between its dorsal and tail fin. The travel great distances yearly and we have been tagging them for some time. This species does have a high rate of recapture. Although the longest time between a tag and recapture for NOAA is over twenty years. Check out the pictures below of Jon's trip!
